George M. Thompson, Jr., 94, of Coldwater, a pillar of the Coldwater community and member of the greatest generation, passed away Sunday, September 7, 2025 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
The funeral service will be held Friday, September 12, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Thursday, September 11, 2025 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater.
George was born July 17, 1931 to George M. Thompson Sr. and Ruth L. (Roberts) Thompson in Kansas City, MO. He later married the love of his life, Gladys M. Thompson December 15, 1951.
George was a member of the United States Army proudly serving his country as a guided missile instructor in the Korean War. This is where his love of flying developed, as he worked closely with astronauts training for space missions.
George started his roots as the owner and operator of Thompson Construction in Coldwater which he founded in 1956. He was very involved in the local community. He was a 3rd Degree member of the Masons, the Flying Club of Coldwater, and loved attending the Fly in Breakfast. He owned his own helicopter and airplane which he loved to fly whenever he was able.
George loved to travel, including trips to Florida, where he enjoyed scuba diving, and the U.P. in Michigan where he would often take his motor home, he was a true adventurer. In 1979, George and 4 friends set a world record for flying around South America in two engine planes, he was truly passionate about flying.
Most of all George loved his family, and the time he was able to spend with them. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather that truly loved and went above and beyond for those he loved. He will truly be missed by all who knew him and worked with him within the community.
George is survived by his children Ralph (Marsha) Thompson, Michael Thompson, Shelly (Paul) Monks, all of Coldwater, Dr. Amy (Beth Sander) Thompson of Clarkston, MI; his grandchildren Stacy (Dan) Ward, Jamie (Trey) Clinard, Kelly Thompson, Paul Monks III, Samuel Monks, Linzy Monks, Sam Sander, Jillian Sander and Jacob (Aimee) Sander; his great grandchildren Emmalynn, Kelsie, Jenna, Kenlee, Katie, Sarah, his several great great grandchildren and his beloved cat Sunny.
George was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Gladys Thompson of 73 years; and his dog Abby.
Memorials may be directed to the Animal Aid of Branch County and/or the Branch County VA.
