COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – With a week to go before the deadline for state leaders in Lansing to come up with a 2026 Fiscal Budget or face the possibility of a state government shutdown next week the ramifications of what the budget may be has a trickle down effect on county government.
Branch County Administrator Frank Walsh says the current budget proposal out of the house could have a profound effect on the local budget in the form of a sizeable reduction in revenue sharing from the state. Last year the county received just under $1.3 million in revenue sharing but Walsh says the current house proposal would reduce that by more than ten percent.
Walsh says although that amount of money is real and has real consequences in the county budget the current house proposal does include major funding for road repairs.
Branch County like most other counties in the state have publicly opposed the only proposal to officially be presented in Lansing.
State Senator Jonathon Lindsey of Coldwater said last week he expects the budget to get done but it would most likely go down the the wire.
