COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Yet another visitor to the Lakeland Correctional Facility in Coldwater was arrested after allegedly being caught with contraband during a scheduled visit with an inmate.
According to a court affidavit, Nyeshia Nicole Thomas checked in for her visit and passed through initial security measures without issue . The incident occurred between security gates, when corrections officers noticed a small item fall from Thomas’s waistband.
An officer recovered the item, which was later identified as containing 50 strips of suspected suboxone.
Video footage confirmed the event, showing the contraband drop from Thomas as she was proceeding to the visiting room, she was then detained while Michigan State Police were contacted and responded to the scene.
During an interview with MSP Detective Sargent Matt Berry, Thomas reportedly admitted to bringing the drugs into the prison at the request of her husband, who is an inmate serving a life sentence for homicide and felony firearm convictions. Thomas stated that her husband had called her to remind her to bring the suboxone, a Schedule 3 controlled substance.
Thomas was charged with felony counts bringing contraband into a prison, and controlled substance possession. District Court Judge Brent Weigle set Thomas’s bond at $10,000 and set a probable cause hearing for October 9 and preliminary exam for October 16.
