LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Today is deadline day in Lansing for state law makers to pass a 2026 year fiscal budget or face the possibility of a state government shutdown Wednesday.
Last week Governor Whitmer, Speaker Matt Hall and Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks announced that they had come to an agreement on the framework for a budget, but details still needed to be ironed out and approved by each chamber, a task that has yet to happen. State Senator Jonathon Lindsey from Coldwater says in a Facebook video one of the sticking points has been proposed tax increases by the Governor and state democrats
Lindsey says one of the areas targeted for a massive tax increase is the states marijuana industry
He says that could be devastating due to the massive amount of money the industry brings in to all levels of government, he says marijuana sales bring in about $3.5 billion dollars of revenue per year due in large part from out of state buyers who find it cheaper to purchase in Michigan. Currently Michigan has a 16% tax on Marijuana 10% of which is in the form of an excise tax and 6% sales tax.
