WASHINGTON, DC (WTVB) – As many Branch County residents are planning a fall getaway, a government shutdown could cause issues if you’re planning on flying to your destination.
U.S. airlines are warning that a government shutdown could cause flight delays and even flight cancellations for travelers.
The airlines are warning Congress that if the government shuts down at midnight Wednesday, flights could be delayed as air traffic controllers and TSA employees would be required to work without pay.
According to reporting from Reuters, absences among controllers and security checkpoint workers rose after employees began skipping work when they were not getting paid during the last government shutdown in 2019 which lasted for 35 days.
The looming shutdown comes as the nation also faces a shortage of 3,000 air traffic controllers.
