UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The Union City Chargers set up a showdown with Springport for first place in the Big 8 Conference on Friday night as they defeated the Reading Rangers 32-6 in the Chargers Homecoming game at Alumni Field.
The Chargers rushing attack accounted for 255 yards unofficially as they improved to 5-2 overall and 5-1 in the Big 8.
Union City took advantage of a couple of short fields to score their first half touchdowns. Quarterback Braxton Miller called his own number and scampered nine yards for a TD just 2:21 into the game.
After Reading cut the lead to 8-6 on a two yard touchdown by Connor Trott early in the second quarter, Miller hooked up with Liam Payne on a 25-yard touchdown pass which gave the Chargers a 14-6 halftime lead.
Union City gradually pulled away in the second half on a pair of Dalton Hawk touchdowns from 35 and 8 yards and Miller’s second rushing touchdown of the night from seven yards out.
Trey MacDonald was the leading rusher for Union City with 85 yards on 11 carries while Hawk had 72 yards on eight carries.
Markis Tucker had 44 yards on 12 carries for Reading as the Rangers dropped to 3-4 overall and 3-3 in the Big 8.
