COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Consumers Energy is urging Michigan residents to prepare for severe weather, with heavy rain and high winds expected to sweep across the state on Sunday, followed by another storm system on Tuesday.
Consumers is mobilizing approximately 200-line worker crews, strategically positioned in Grand Rapids, Jackson, and Mount Pleasant, to respond swiftly to potential power outages. Greg Salisbury, president of electric distribution at Consumers Energy, emphasized the company’s commitment to restoring power quickly, stating, “We’re closely watching the weather forecast and are making sure our crews are in the best position to restore power to our customers who count on us.”
To ensure a rapid response, Consumers Energy’s crews are prepared to work up to 16-hour shifts around the clock until power is fully restored. The company advises customers to visit ConsumersEnergy.com/OutageCenter for preparation tips, access the online outage map, report outages, or sign up for restoration updates via the Consumers Energy app. Safety precautions include staying at least 25 feet away from downed power lines, reporting them to 9-1-1 and Consumers Energy at 800-477-5050, and never using generators in enclosed spaces to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
Residents are also encouraged to charge devices, prepare emergency kits with essentials like flashlights, water, and food, and unplug sensitive electronics to protect against power surges.
