QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – Michigan State Police troopers are investigating a fraud case after a Quincy business was contacted by individuals posing as representatives from a Kalamazoo radio station.
The scammers requested payment to promote the business on air, specifically citing a Veterans Day promotion. However, suspicion was raised when the callers stated the ad would air in December rather than November, the correct month for Veterans Day.
The legitimate radio station has been notified of the scheme.
In response to the attempted scam, MSP is warning the public and local businesses to be cautious and take appropriate steps to protect themselves.
The public is advised to never share personal or business information without first verifying the identity of the person contacting them. If a caller’s identity cannot be confirmed, no information should be provided. In this case, the targeted business did not provide any information to the fraudulent callers.
Authorities also recommend notifying the business or organization the scammer claims to represent and to contact proper authorities if sensitive information has been compromised.
