COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Now that we have had our first taste of winter weather in Branch County, residents are reminded of a recent change in Michigan law that has altered previous regulations, now granting utilities the authority to disconnect electric service during the traditionally protected winter months, defined as November through April.
This modification applies to service providers like the Coldwater Board of Public Utilities (CBPU). As a result, customers who fall behind on their payments during this period may face service interruption. CBPU is urging residents experiencing financial hardship to proactively reach out and explore available payment solutions to prevent shutoffs.
Customers facing difficulty in paying their utility bills are encouraged to take action immediately to avoid service interruption. The CBPU Customer Service Team can be reached directly at (517) 279-9531 to discuss various payment options. Additionally, individuals seeking low-income assistance can call 211 for referrals. Further support is available through the Department of Human Services (DHS) at (517) 279-4200, or by visiting their office at 388 Keith Wilhelm Drive in Coldwater.
The DHS can provide direct assistance or connect residents with community partners, such as Jacobs Well, which works with CBPU to support low-income customers.
