COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A new pedestrian crosswalk has been installed on Western Avenue near Legg Middle School and Heritage Park, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the local DMS and Electric Departments.
The addition aims to enhance safety for students and park visitors in the busy area.
The new system features a push-button activation that triggers flashing lights for 45 seconds, providing ample warning to drivers and sufficient time for pedestrians to cross the street safely.
Authorities are reminding drivers to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and to continue exercising extra caution when navigating through school zones to ensure the safety of all students and community members.
Coldwater City Council has also approved a resolution requesting a study by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) to investigate the need for audible pedestrian crosswalk signals at 10 intersections along the U.S. 12 corridor, which includes the intersection near Western Avenue and Fiske Road.

A local sight impaired group requested a study for auidable signals along Chicago St last summer, is it just now getting done. MDOT also needs to do a traffic study at Willowbrook and Chicago ST(WalMart) for a left turn signal on the Willowbrook side of the intersection. It can take two or three cycles to turn left off Willowbrook during busy periods.
