ANGOLA, IN (WTVB) – A teacher at Angola High School 49-year-old Debra L. McGillem from Reading, MI faces multiple preliminary charges after two students unknowingly consumed candy suspected of containing THC in her classroom.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday, prompted an investigation that allegedly uncovered additional food items suspected of containing THC in McGillem’s possession.
McGillem was booked into the Steuben County Jail on preliminary felony charges of neglect of a dependent and possession of a controlled substance on school property. She also faces a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated in connection with the case.
The superintendent of MSD Steuben County, Matthew Widenhoefer, released a statement Friday night.
“The school district is aware that an MSDSC staff member has been booked into the Steuben County Jail. The district has initiated an internal investigation, and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with district policy and applicable law”.
McGillem is currently being held on a $6,500 bond as police continue their investigation into the incident.
