CENTERVILLE, MI (WTVB) – Maple, a nine-year-old English Springer Spaniel from the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department, has won the American Kennel Club (AKC) Humane Fund Awards for Canine Excellence (ACE) in the Search & Rescue – Human Detection category.
The prestigious award celebrates loyal, hard-working dogs who have significantly improved their communities.
Owned and handled by Special Deputy Sue Stejskal, Maple began her career as a bed bug detection dog before transitioning to human remains detection during the COVID-19 pandemic.
A work injury led to her retirement from search and rescue, but she is now training to locate bacteria that kills honeybees for a Michigan State University research project.
