ALGANSEE TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – Work is almost done on a new location for the Algansee Branch of the Branch District Library.
The library will soon be operating out of the old Algansee Township Hall at 378 South Ray Quincy Road which was built in 1877.
The building became available when the new Township Hall opened this summer.
Algansee Township Treasurer Sharon Atkinson told the Branch County Planning Commission on Wednesday morning that door trimming needs to be applied and that a back door has to be replaced.
It’s hoped the building will be ready by the end of the month but no official opening date has been announced.
According to the library’s web site, a general store in the Village of Algansee built in 1880 that was known as Safford’s Store was chosen as the place to have the first library and thanks to a Kellogg Foundation grant the library opened in 1938.
It was closed briefly in 1963 in favor of a bi-monthly bookmobile to the area but was re-opened by the Branch County Library Board in February of 1964 and it has remained at the same location ever since.
