COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – We are learning more about the events Tuesday night that led to a police standoff in Sherwood Township.
Matthew Wayne Callahan of Battle Creek faces felony charges after a standoff with Branch County Sheriff’s deputies in Sherwood Township on late Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning.
Callahan is charged with assaulting/resisting/obstructing a police officer after multiple threats were made during the standoff.
According to court documents, deputies responded to a tip about a parole absconder, identified as Callahan, at a camper on Arney Road .
After initially giving a false name, Callahan was identified and allegedly made several threats to a deputy over the phone . The St. Joseph County Special Response Team was requested and activated. After multiple attempts to get him to exit, Callahan eventually came out of the camper and was arrested by the Special Response Team without further incident.
Callahan is described in court documents as a habitual offender, fourth offense, with prior felony convictions including weapons offenses, controlled substance possession, and resisting/obstructing a police officer . Due to his habitual offender status, if convicted, he faces an enhanced penalies.
Callahan will have preliminary examination hearing on December 17, 2025. He remains in the Branch County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
