COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Local businesses within Coldwater’s historic downtown district are encouraged to prepare their applications as the next round of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s (MEDC) Match on Main grant program is anticipated to open soon.
The program provides reimbursement grants of up to $25,000 to support new or expanding “place-based” businesses.
The program, administered locally by the Coldwater Downtown Development Authority (DDA), has a history of successful local awards, including recent grants for the Children’s Museum of Branch County and Shemel’s Carpet & Interiors.
The Match on Main program is designed to support businesses and nonprofits that offer face-to-face goods or services and have a physical location within an eligible downtown area. Funds can be used for various improvements, including technical assistance, building renovation and permanent and semi-permanent activation of outdoor space.
To be considered, businesses must provide at least a 10 percent match of the requested funds. The local DDA reviews all applications and selects up to two projects to submit to the MEDC for final approval.
While the official local application window for the next cycle has not yet been publicly announced, the state program typically has an annual application period in the first quarter of the year, with winners announced in late spring or summer.
The MEDC doubled its investment in the program for the fiscal year 2025 due to its success in leveraging private investment and creating jobs across the state. The program has a proven track record, with 91% of funded businesses remaining operational since its launch in 2019.
