COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – AAA Michigan predicts a record-breaking holiday season in 2025, with an estimated 3.9 million residents traveling 50 miles or more between December 20 and January 1.
This is 1.8% increase over last year marks the busiest year-end travel period on record for the state.
While approximately 3.5 million Michiganders will hit the roads, air travel is also surging, with nearly 220,000 residents expected to fly despite a 7% rise in domestic airfare.
Those driving to their destinations will find significant relief at the pump, as Michigan gas prices reached a 2025 low of $2.73 per gallon just before Christmas—well below the $3.06 average from the same time last year.
To manage the influx, experts recommend that drivers avoid peak congestion hours, typically between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m., and use resources like the MDOT Mi Drive app for real-time updates. For those flying, AAA advises arriving at the airport at least two hours early.
