HILLSDALE, MI (WTVB) – A Hillsdale County jury has convicted 60-year-old Vincent Allen Payne of Valrico, Florida, for the sexual assault of a minor relative between 2004 and 2008.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced the verdict, which found Payne guilty of one count of First-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct.
The assaults occurred while Payne resided in the same Hillsdale household as the victim, who was under the age of 15 at the time. Although the Hillsdale County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office initially filed charges in January 2010, Payne remained a fugitive until last year. He was eventually apprehended and extradited from Florida by the U.S. Marshals Service under “Operation Survivor Justice,” a collaborative initiative between the Attorney General’s office, local prosecutors, and federal authorities to track down sexual assault suspects with outstanding warrants.
Payne is currently held in custody and is scheduled for sentencing on March 2.
