ANGOLA, IN (WTVB) – The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a serious three-vehicle crash that occurred on Saturday evening, just before 6:00 p.m. on US 20 near Silver Lake in rural Pleasant Township.
Deputies and emergency responders arrived to find a heavily damaged 2014 Hyundai Azera in the westbound lane, a SUV overturned in a ditch on the north side of the highway, and a Jeep off the south side near CR 370 W.
The drivers of the Hyundai and the SUV were trapped inside their vehicles, prompting quick extrication by Angola Fire Department crews. The Steuben County Fatal Accident Crash Team (FACT) assisted due to the crash’s severity, and the incident closed US 20 for about two hours.
Preliminary investigation revealed that a 1999 Jeep Cherokee driven by 17-year-old Landen Lane-Granger of Angola, Indiana, was traveling westbound when it crossed the centerline and struck the eastbound Hyundai Azera driven by 28-year-old Jaci Miller of Jones, Michigan, in a near head-on collision.
The impact pushed Miller’s vehicle into the path of a westbound bronze 2010 Honda CR-V driven by 46-year-old James Isfalt of Sturgis, Michigan, resulting in another near head-on crash that caused the Honda to overturn.
All three drivers were wearing seatbelts, and airbags deployed. The roadway was snow-covered with ongoing snowfall at the time, though alcohol is not believed to be a factor.
Miller and Isfalt were transported by Steuben County EMS to Parkview Regional Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries, with Miller reporting pain throughout her body and Isfalt suffering severe lower leg trauma.
Lane-Granger was taken to Cameron Hospital with a possible broken leg.
The crash remains under active investigation by the Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from Angola Police, Angola Fire, Steuben County EMS, and the Indiana State Police.
