COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has awarded Coldwater Township $375,000, as part of a larger $3.87 million distribution in Renewables Ready Communities Awards (RRCA).
This seventh round of funding supports nine Michigan communities that are hosting utility-scale solar and battery storage projects.
The award specifically recognizes Coldwater Township’s role in hosting the Cold Creek Energy Center, a 75-megawatt battery storage project scheduled to begin construction in September and reach operational status by March 2027.
These flexible grants are designed to incentivize local governments to host large-scale renewable energy infrastructure by providing funds that can be reinvested into essential services and community priorities.
The latest grant will help Coldwater Township’s projected fund balance exceed $4 million in the 2026-27 budget, supplementing traditional tax revenue.
Beyond Coldwater, other recipients in this round included Midland Township, which received $750,000, and Fairgrove Township, which was awarded $500,000 for battery storage projects. The RRCA program is a key component of Michigan’s broader climate goals, which include reaching 60% renewable energy by 2035 and 100% clean energy by 2040.
