JACKSON, MI (WTVB) – Consumers Energy is encouraging it’s customers to apply for the state’s Home Heating Credit as tax season begins to help manage energy costs following recent cold temperatures.
The credit averages nearly $200 and is available to households with incomes at or below 110% of the federal poverty level, which is approximately $35,365 for a family of four.
Lauren Snyder, Consumers Energy’s senior vice president and chief customer officer, says the company is prioritizing outreach to vulnerable customers and has donated $5 million to nonprofits to assist with bill payments.
To qualify for the credit (MI-1040CR-7), residents are not required to file a full tax return, and the funds can be used for heating expenses from the previous year.
Consumers Energy suggests calling 2-1-1 to connect with free tax preparation through VITA sites.
Consumers is also identifying customers most affected by high winter bills to provide direct help with payment plans and energy-reduction strategies.
