STURGIS, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater varsity basketball came up with a pair of non-conference victories Monday at Sturgis as the regular season starts to wind down.
The Lady Cards took care of business against the Trojans, winning 44-36 in a defensive battle that saw both teams combine for 41 turnovers. Coldwater led 12-10 after one, 21-18 at the half, and 37-30 after three. They also out-rebounded Sturgis 27-20 and went 12-for-14 from the free throw line, while the Trojans went 0-for-10 from the perimeter.
Addy Bucklin led all scorers with 12 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists, while Coley Burkhardt had 10 points, 3 boards, 2 assists, and 4 steals. Rylie VanAken added 9 points and 5 rebounds. Mya Porter was held in check but still finished with 7 points, 2 board, 3 assists, 3 steals, and 3 blocks.
No Trojan player finished in double digits; Sydney Bir had a team-high 9 points as Sturgis fell to 15-3.
Coldwater improved to 11-7 and will host a makeup game against Harper Creek on Wednesday.

The Cardinals lost the JV girls game 51-25. Ellerie Bucklin led Coldwater with 10 points.
In the varsity boys game, Coldwater put a damper on Sturgis’s Senior Night by beating the Trojans 51-34. The Cardinals led 12-6 through the first quarter and expanded the lead to 26-12 at halftime and 36-22 after three.
Owen Tappenden led Coldwater with a career-high 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals, while Gavin Taylor added 13 points and 5 assists.
Fernando Villasan had 11 points to lead Sturgis, who fell to 8-12 on the season.
The Cardinals will take a 10-10 overall record into their Tuesday night contest at Lakeview.

At Coldwater, the Cardinal JV boys team defeated Sturgis 51-33. Kolton Rice had a team-high 15 points, Mayson Moore added 12, and Joe Hayward scored 10.
