QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – The Springport Spartans clinched at least a share of the Big 8 Conference boys basketball championship in emphatic fashion on Tuesday night as they romped to a 68-37 victory over the Quincy Orioles in the Coolest Gym in Michigan.
The game was competitive for one quarter as the Spartans only led 11-8 through the first eight minutes.
Springport used a 22-12 second quarter to take a 33-20 lead at the half. The Spartans put the pedal to medal in the second half as they outscored Quincy after intermission 35-17 to turn the game into a blowout.
Alex Dunn led Quincy with a game-high 19 points while J.J. Wright had five rebounds.
Dallas Higelmire put on a show as he led Springport with 18 points. His performance included five dunks and four blocked shots. Brody Baum added 14 points. Tucker Wiginton had 10 points and Jake Kregel grabbed six rebounds.
Springport used their height advantage to outrebound Quincy 25-18.
The J.V. game was also won by Springport 61-51.
Springport can win the outright Big 8 crown if they can defeat Reading on Thursday. Concord stayed one game back of the Spartans for first place on Tuesday night as they defeated Union City 65-59.
Springport has beaten Concord twice this season including last Friday night when the Spartans took over the conference lead with a 62-44 win over the Yellow Jackets.
Springport improved to 16-5 overall and 12-1 in the Big 8. Quincy dropped to 10-10 overall and 5-8 in the conference.
