COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council introduced an ordinance Monday night which amends the city’s fire codes covering the ever increasing number of food trucks.
Fire Chief Dave Schmaltz said these ordinance amendments will enable the Coldwater Fire Department to efficiently track and complete inspections through the use of a third-party software platform.
Fire Marshal Steve Trall says they want to be part of a system that is already being used by a regional consortium of fire inspectors throughout Southwest Michigan as well as the greater metropolitan Detroit area.
This means food trucks can complete an inspection at any of the municipalities in the consortium and the Coldwater Fire Department will be able to confirm safety compliance.
City Attorney Amanda O’Boyle says compliance ensures that the food trucks are safe for the general public as well as the vendors themselves.
Schmaltz said in his memo to City Manager Keith Baker that while the Coldwater Fire Department does not intend to impose any fees for these inspections, the third-party software provider currently assesses an annual 25 dollar fee.
Formal action is expected to be taken by the City Council during their meeting March 9.
