COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – On Senior Night at the Coach Floyd Eby Gymnasium, the Coldwater girls basketball team put on a defensive show in a 54-35 non-conference win against Otsego In the process, one of the Cardinal seniors set a personal milestone.
With her first basket of the third quarter, senior Mya Porter became the sixth Coldwater girls basketball player, and eleventh overall, to score 1,000 career points. She finished the night with 15 points and added 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals, putting her career total at 1,005 points and counting. Porter’s cousin, fellow senior Rylie VanAken, led all scorers with 16 points, 2 assists, and 2 steals. As for the other seniors, Coley Burkhardt had 4 points, 3 boards, 5 steals, and 2 blocks, while her cousin, Danika Cox, finished with 3 rebounds and 3 assists.
The Cardinals led 15-6 after one and 26-11 at halftime as they forced 9 Otsego turnovers in the first quarter alone and 20 for the game. The third quarter was more competitive thanks to junior Brooke Smalldon, who scored 10 points in the quarter as the Bulldogs held a slight 13-12 edge in the stanza. Smalldon finished with 13 points, while Audrey Lingbeek had 12 as Otsego fell to 16-2 on the season.
Coldwater wrapped up the regular season with a 15-7 record and will face Loy Norrix Monday at 7 p.m. in the first round of the MHSAA Division 1 Girls Basketball District at the Battle Creek Central Fieldhouse. Coverage on WTVB will begin Monday at 6:45 p.m.
