COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – State Sen. Jonathan Lindsey (R-Coldwater), joined a bipartisan, bicameral group of lawmakers to unveil a legislative package aimed at tackling Michigan’s housing shortage by reducing regulatory barriers and “red tape.”
Lindsey emphasized that overregulation adds roughly $94,000 in costs to new construction, arguing that removing these constraints is essential for creating more affordable, available housing.
Lindsey said “This isn’t the only area where government regulations are stifling growth, but housing is one of the more glaring examples and is one that we should all agree on. We cannot grow as a state if people have nowhere to live.”
The proposed reforms focus on easing zoning, reducing minimum parking and square footage requirements to promote starter homes, and enforcing a 60-day timeline for local government decision-making.
Lindsey is actively supporting these measures in the Senate to address the state’s housing needs and facilitate growth.
