LANSING, MI (WTVB) – State Representative Jennifer Wortz (R-Quincy) has introduced a legislative package, House Bills 5594-5596, aimed at halting the construction of new data centers in Michigan until April 1, 2027.
Co-sponsored by Rep. Joseph Fox and Rep. Dylan Wegela, the “Data Center Regulation Act” seeks to provide local communities time to evaluate the environmental and infrastructure impacts of large-scale projects, which Wortz argues can overwhelm local resources.
Following a recent court ruling that limited community intervention in a Saline Township project, this moratorium seeks to address concerns regarding the high energy and water demands of hyperscale developments. The proposed legislation, which focuses on protecting land and ensuring local input, has been referred to the House Committee on Government Operations for consideration.
