PORTAGE, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater High School boys swim and dive team traveled to Portage Central Friday and Saturday for their SMAC conference championship.
All 14 Cardinals qualified for the Saturday finals, and all set a personal best in at least one of their events during the weekend. Three more MHSAA state cuts were added this weekend, and four team records were broken at championships.
The relay of Taylor Eberts, Cooper Otto, Logun Fisher and Mason Sabaitis earned a state cut and broke the team record in the 200Medley relay Friday. Taylor Eberts earned a state cut in the 100 freestyle as leadoff in the 400 freestyle. The relay of Taylor, Wyatt Lanning, Mason Sabaitis, and Cooper Otto earned a state cut in the 400 freestyle relay.
Benny Travelbee broke the 11 dive record with a score of 347.15. Cooper Otto broke the 100 backstroke record, once Friday in the prelims and again Saturday in the finals.
Otto also gets the honor of being the first Coldwater boys swimmer to win an event at the championship, coming in first in the 100 backstroke.
Mason Sabaitis earned Second Team All-Conference honors for the second year in a row. Cooper Otto and Taylor Eberts earned First Team All-Conference honors for the second year in a row.
The Cardinal divers will be back in action Thursday at the Regional competition.
