UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Come state tournament time, everybody is 0-0. After winning just five games during the regular season, the Bronson Vikings girls basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the MHSAA Division Three District tournament at McNett Fieldhouse in Union City on Monday night with a 33-25 victory over the Constantine Falcons.
Bronson scored the first seven points of the game and never trailed. They led 10-8 after the first quarter before both teams got on the struggle bus offensively in the second period.
Bronson’s Itzel Albarran scored the only two buckets of the quarter to give the Vikings a 14-8 halftime lead.
Constantine’s offense awoke in the third quarter as the Falcons got to within 19-17 but Bronson managed to take a 24-19 lead into the final quarter.
Bronson had to overcome major foul trouble as Braylynn Dow and Veronica Bir both picked up their fourth fouls in the third quarter.
The Vikings managed to open up a ten point lead in the last quarter which was too much for the Falcons to overcome.
Albarran led all scorers with 11 points while Bir added seven points. Jaelyn Buglione led Constantine with seven points. Bronson improved to 6-17 while Constantine finished at 10-12.
The Vikings will face the host Union City Chargers in the first semifinal game at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Chargers are the top seed for the district tournament. Schoolcraft plays Centreville in the second semifinal.
Wednesday’s winners will meet for the district crown on Friday night at 7:00 p.m..
