BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater’s bid for a fourth straight MHSAA Division 1 Girls Basketball District championship was thwarted by their longtime rivals, the Sturgis Trojans, as they beat the Cardinals 44-38 in Friday’s District title game at the Battle Creek Central Fieldhouse.
The Trojans led 8-4 after the first quarter, but Coldwater outscored Sturgis 13-10 in the second and trailed by just one, 18-17, at halftime. The Trojans had a 10-2 advantage in the third and opened up a nine-point lead, 28-19, heading to the final eight minutes. The Cardinals, forced to play catch-up all night, had a 19-16 edge in the fourth, but fell six points short as they had no three-pointers the entire game.
Rylie VanAken led Coldwater with 12 points, 2 rebounds, and 3 steals, while Addy Bucklin had 10 points and 2 boards. Mya Porter was held to 7 points, with 4 rebounds and 3 steals, and fouled out early in the fourth quarter. The Cardinals concluded their campaign with a 17-8 record.
Sydney Bir led all scorers with 19 points, while Cora Phillips added 14, as Sturgis improved to 20-3 and took home the program’s first District Championship trophy since 2015. The Trojans advance to face DeWitt Monday at 5:30 p.m. in the first game of a Division 1 Regional Semifinal doubleheader at Holt High School. DeWitt advanced with a 51-41 win against East Lansing at the Grand Ledge District final.

UNION CITY, MI – In the aftermath of the severe storms that moved through northwest Branch County Friday afternoon, the scheduled Division 3 District Final contest between Union City and Schoolcraft was rescheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. at the McNett Fieldhouse. The Union City Athletic Department says that all tickets previously purchased for Friday will still work on Saturday.
QUINCY, MI – Homer won the Division 3 Quincy District Friday with a 60-52 win against Hudson. The Trojans will take a 13-11 record into their Division 3 Regional Semifinal contest against Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central Monday at 7 p.m. at Jackson Lumen Christi.
