DETROIT, MI (WTVB) – Of the eleven wrestlers from Branch County taking part in the MHSAA Individual Finals at Ford Field, six have moved on to the second day of competition. Here is how Branch County wrestlers fared after the first day of the MHSAA Individual Finals:
Coldwater (Division 2)
Ruben Torres (138) was eliminated on a pin and technical fall.
Raul Cecilio (215) has also been eliminated. He lost on a 12-4 major decision in his first match, won on a 4-1 decision in sudden victory in the first round of the consolation bracket and then lost on a 9-3 decision in the consolation bracket second round.
Bronson (Division 3)
Brycen Fincham (165) has been eliminated after losing on a pin and a major decision.
Gabriel Erwin (175) advanced to the semifinals on a pin and a 8-7 decision but lost in the semis on a 9-7 decision and is now in the consolation bracket.
Layne Knisely (190) is through to the state finals thanks to three first period pins.
Sam Tappenden (285) is in the consolation bracket after he lost on a 1-0 decision in the quarterfinals. He won on a 2-0 decision in the second round of the consolation bracket.
Union City (Division 4)
Blayne Crance (132) won on a 17-1 technical fall but lost in the quarterfinals on a 20-3 tech fall. He then won on a 14-4 major decision in the second round of the consolation round.
Kaden Russell (126) is in the consolation bracket. He lost 12-9 in sudden victory overtime, scored a pin in the first round of the consolation bracket and then won on a 1-0 decision in round two.
Mitchell Graham (138) has been eliminated. He lost on a 15-0 technical fall, won on a major decision in the first round of the consolation bracket before losing on a pin.
Isaiah Waidelich (157) won on a pin in the first round but lost on a fall in the quarterfinals. He won in the second round of the consolation bracket on a 15-5 major decision.
Girls Division
Union City’s Onalee Taylor (105) has been eliminated. She lost on a pin, won on a 9-4 decision in the first round of the consolation bracket before losing on a 16-0 technical fall.
The State Finals resume at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. The championship matches will start at 3:30 p.m.
