COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Due to increased bulb failures and the age of the equipment overall, the City of Coldwater is looking to replace the traffic signal at the intersection of State Street and Marshall Streets.
The Coldwater Board of Public Utilities Electric Department performs the maintenance on the signal for that intersection, one of two in the city not owned and maintained by the Michigan Department of Transportation.
In addition to the bulb failures, city officials say the signal controller is obsolete and in need of replacement. The project would include upgrading to LED lamps to reduce the frequency of maintenance calls on the signals.
The City recently solicited and opened three bids ranging from just over $42,000 to over $76,000. The successful bid was from Severance Electric Co., Inc. of Kalamazoo for $42,237.50.
City Manager Keith Baker says while not specifically budgeted for Fiscal Year 2025-26, the project would be funded from the city’s Act 51 Major and Local Street Fund and not the city’s General Fund. He says there are sufficient reserves in the street fund to cover the cost of the project.
The project will include upgrading the intersection of US-27 and State, including replacing the existing cabinet and controller with new pole mounted equipment; two 4-way traffic signals-new and rewired; one wood pole mounted countdown pedestrian signal, new and rewired; 2-way (inline) mounted countdown pedestrian signal, new and rewired; and one pedestal mounted pedestrian signal, new and rewired.
Once completed, the project will bring the intersection up to MDOT signalized intersection standards.
The Coldwater City Council is expected to approve the project at their meeting Monday afternoon.
