DETROIT, MI (WTVB) – All six wrestlers from Branch County that made it to the second day of the MHSAA Individual Finals at Ford Field in Detroit returned home with medals for finishing in the top eight in their respective weight classes. The county contingent was led by Bronson’s latest state champion.
Bronson (Division 3)
Senior Layne Knisely won the Division 3 190 lb. title with an 11-5 decision over Alex Schram of Saginaw Swan Valley.
Gabriel Erwin (175) lost a 10-8 decision in the consolation semifinals, but bounced back to pin Derek Kline of Livonia Clarenceville at the 1:46 mark to claim fifth place.
Sam Tappenden (285) advanced to the consolation semifinals on a forfeit, but lost an 8-0 major decision in that round and dropped a 4-3 decision to Kingsford’s Connor White to finish in sixth place.

Union City (Division 4)
Kaden Russell (126) lost a 9-3 decision in the consolation third round and was pinned in the seventh place match at 2:01 by Addison’s Caden Olsofski to finish in eighth place.
Blayne Crance (132) dropped a 5-3 decision in the consolation third round and earned a 7-0 decision over Springport’s Raymond Courter in the seventh place match.
Isaiah Waidelich (157) won a 6-3 decision in the consolation third round, was pinned in the consolation semis, and lost a 10-0 major decision to Perry’s Aiden Turner to finish sixth.
