COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council adopted a pair of ordinances Monday night which increases fines for parking violations for the first time in 30 years.
Director of Public Safety Joe Scheid told the Council two weeks ago the ordinances define and clarify fines for front yard and overnight on street parking violations.
The current penalty for parking in a front yard is five dollars while it’s $10 for parking on the streets between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m..
Scheid wanted to increase the penalties to $25 across the board because he felt they were seeing repeat offenders.
The proposal to amend the Uniform Traffic Code through Ordinance Number 881 to increase the amount of fines was passed five to one with Council member Emily Rissman voting no.
The ordinance to amend the Uniform Traffic Code which updated the language related to front yard parking violations was adopted on a six to nothing vote.
The ordinances will take effect 21 days after they are published.
