COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Just days after Branch County was hit with a deadly tornado, the area is once again under the gun for the threat of severe weather tonight into Wednesday morning, after the National Weather Service upgraded the entire area into an Enhanced Risk for severe thunderstorms earlier today.
Forecasts indicate that scattered supercells may develop between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., bringing the potential for tornados and large hail up to two inches in diameter.
The Storm Prediction Center has issued it’s first ever “Cig 2” category for tornadoes with their newest update, indicating the risk for strong to intense tornadoes this evening for portions of Illinois, northern Indiana, and southern Michigan.
The forecast calls for a near 100% chance of rain, with some storms capable of producing heavy rainfall after midnight as the system evolves into a possible squall line across Southern Michigan and Northern Indiana.
This new round of storms arrives as the Union City community continues to recover from a devastating EF-3 tornado just four days ago.
Residents are strongly urged to review their safety plans, ensure they have multiple ways to receive alerts, and identify a safe shelter space before the first storms arrive this evening.
