COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A 22-year-old Coldwater man will server probation for his part the now infamous Monroe Street pepper spray incident in February 2025.
Dakota McDaniel avoided jail time after pleading guilty to a felony charge of assault with a dangerous weapon regarding a pepper-spray incident in downtown Coldwater.
As part of a plea deal, visiting Judge Amy Ronayne Krause granted McDaniel Holmes Youthful Training Act (HYTA) probation, meaning the felony can be vacated if he completes the terms.
Court records indicate that while accomplice James Ryall deployed the spray, McDaniel aided in the altercation, which occurred outside Jim’s Place on South Monroe.
The incident began when the pair wore masks while filming patrons, escalating when Ryall sprayed individuals who objected to being recorded. During proceedings, it was acknowledged that their actions caused public harassment.
Prosecutors stated that while filming in public is permitted, these actions crossed into unlawful territory.
