COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council passed a pair of ordinances Monday night which amends the city’s fire codes covering food trucks.
Fire Chief Dave Schmaltz said two weeks ago when the ordinances were introduced that these ordinance amendments will enable the Coldwater Fire Department to efficiently track and complete inspections through the use of a third-party software platform.
Fire Marshal Steve Trall says they want to be part of a system that is already being used by a regional consortium of fire inspectors throughout Southwest Michigan as well as the greater metropolitan Detroit area.
Food trucks can complete an inspection at any of the municipalities in the consortium and the Coldwater Fire Department will be able to confirm safety compliance.
City Attorney Amanda O’Boyle says compliance ensures that the food trucks are safe for the general public as well as the vendors themselves.
Schmaltz says the Coldwater Fire Department does not intend to impose any fees for these inspections but the third-party software provider currently assesses an annual 25 dollar fee.
