COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Gasoline prices in Coldwater have officially climbed to the $4.00 per gallon mark, a significant threshold that has local drivers feeling at the pump this week.
This surge follows a month of steady increases across Branch County, where averages were closer to $3.25 just two weeks ago.
This current spike mirrors similar price levels seen in the area during the summer of 2024 and the record-breaking highs of March 2022, when prices also topped $4.00 following the start of war in Ukraine.
According to Gas Buddy’s The primary driver behind this latest increase is the volatility of global oil prices, which have recently topped $95 per barrel.
According to Gas Buddy Petroleum Analyst Matt McClain , rising crude costs—exacerbated by ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the closure of Strait of Hormuz —have put immense upward pressure on retail fuel.
Additionally, the seasonal transition to more expensive summer-blend gasoline and routine refinery maintenance are creating a “double headwind” for Michigan drivers, with experts warning that prices could climb even higher if crude oil continues its current trajectory.
