COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Michigan gas prices are currently surging as one of the fastest rising in the nation, driven primarily by escalating geopolitical tensions and conflict involving Iran.
According to GasBuddy petroleum analyst Patrick De Haan, Michigan has recently ranked among the top five states for the steepest price increases. As Wednesday, the AAA statewide average for a gallon of regular unleaded has reached $3.87 a sharp climb from roughly $2.98 just weeks ago.
Analysts attribute this volatility to the effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime passage that handles approximately 20% of the worlds oil supply.
The impact on local motorists has been immediate, with somesome stations raising prices as high as $3.99 per gallon . Beyond the conflict, De Haan noted that Michigan’s spike is further exacerbated by the seasonal transition to more expensive summer blend gasoline, which typically adds about 15 cents per gallon to production costs.
While the Trump Administration has characterized these price hikes as a temporary consequence of neutralizing regional threats, experts warn that fuel costs may remain elevated or continue to fluctuate as long as global oil markets remain unsettled by the ongoing instability.
