UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Multi-agency crews, including the Branch County Sheriff’s Office, Calhoun County, and Nottawaseppi Tribal Police, transitioned to water-borne recovery operations on Saturday, 15 days after an EF-3 tornado struck Sherwood Township.
Teams worked to clear debris-clogged coves along Prairie Rose Lane using boats and winches to remove wreckage, aiming to protect the Riley Dam downstream and clear environmental hazards.
Under the direction of Emergency Manager Tim Miner, the operation focused on removing debris from the lake, while officials noted that cleaning surrounding wetlands will take several months.
Although submerged watercraft remain for future recovery, residents are urged to stay out of the water, allowing authorities time to handle the hazardous cleanup efforts.
