COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The CBPU Board of Directors approved a bid of just over $129,000 on Wednesday night from Lakeland Electronics for 19 budgeted physical security projects for the City and the utility.
The projects were budgeted for Fiscal Year 2026. Information Technology Director Pat Pool said they include upgrades to automated gates, controlled-access doors and security camera systems.
Pool stated the original budget was $115,750. During the evaluation process, five additional projects were identified and included.in the proposal.
Lakeland Electronics and KnightWatch completed site visits and submitted proposals. The Lakeland proposal was cheaper by over $36,000.
A third vendor, EPS Security, expressed initial interest but did not submit a proposal.
The most expensive project will be over $25,000 for gate access control at the Butters Road Compost Site.
In other business, the Board once again opted out of the State of Michigan’s Public Act 95 for the next year because the utility already partners with Jacob’s Well Ministries of Coldwater to handle the disbursements of vouchers to eligible customers under the requirements of the Michigan Energy Assistance Program. CBPU Director Paul Jakubczak says the opt out was in their best intrest.
The Board approved a program last October which provided assistance to low-income customers that met all of the requirements of PA 95.
Jakubczak says the net utility write-offs were $30,092 last year. Through March of 2026, they stand at $27,390.
