STEUBEN COUNTY, IN (WTVB) -The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a school bus crash that occurred just after 9:30 a.m. Monday morning in rural Otsego Township.
According to the Sheriff’s Department a 2025 Freightliner overturned on its side in the 5500 block of South CR 300 E.
The driver, 71-year-old Jennie Hammond, and the sole passenger, 19-year-old Makenna Warner, both of Angola, were able to evacuate and were transported to Cameron Hospital for pain treatment.
Preliminary investigation, including a review of onboard surveillance, indicated the driver was distracted by a cellular phone, causing the bus to drift off the road and into a ditch, leading to a citation for using a telecommunications device while driving.
While the driver was using a seatbelt, the passenger was not, and alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the incident.
