BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – Most of Tuesday’s scheduled high school baseball and softball games throughout Branch County were postponed due to cold temperatures. They toughed it out in Bronson, though, as the Vikings split with Maple Valley in the Big 8 Conference opener for both schools. The Lions took the opener 7-2, while Bronson won the nightcap 11-5 in 6 innings.
The first game saw Maple Valley break a 1-1 tie with 6 runs in the sixth inning. Reid Stukey, Joe Fair, and Max Byler collected the only three hits off Lion pitching; Fair had the lone RBI. Starting pitcher Warner Wotta allowed six unearned runs in 5 1/3 innings but was able to strike out 7 and walk one batter.
In the second game, Bronson pulled away with 6 runs in their half of the sixth inning. Collin Webb smacked a three-run double, while Joe Fair went 3-for-4, drove in 2 runs, and got the win on the mound in relief of Max Byler. Warner Wotta went 2-for-3, and Ben Stevens was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs.
The Vikings improved to 2-1 overall, 1-1 in the Big 8, and are back in action Wednesday afternoon as they host Mendon.

- Coldwater baseball and softball will travel to Gull Lake Wednesday.
- Quincy baseball and softball will be at Springport on Friday after playing at Addison Thursday.
