GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WTVB) – A Colombian national who led a sophisticated, multi-state burglary ring was sentenced to 70 months in federal prison Thursday.
29-year-old John Sebastian Quintero-Herrera pleaded guilty to the interstate transportation of stolen property after leading a crew that targeted the homes of small business owners across the United States, including high-value heists in Michigan.
U.S. District Judge Jane M. Beckering described the group’s highly organized methods, which included using GPS trackers, hidden surveillance cameras, and cutting power to residences as “Ocean’s Eleven-style conduct” that was “downright cruel.”
The ring, consisting of seven individuals who were all in the country illegally, stole more than $1.5 million in cash, jewelry, and luxury items from at least 20 homes nationwide. Federal prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Michigan noted that the group specifically targeted victims they suspected kept large amounts of cash at home, often leaving the properties in complete disarray with slashed mattresses and scattered belongings.
Other arrested and sentenced included
- Iesua Ramirez-Perez, 39 months in prison for conspiracy to transport stolen property
- Ivan Chaparro-Perez, 42 months for conspiracy to transport stolen property
- William Villarraga-Joya, 90 months for interstate transportation of stolen property
- Paul Mendoza-Arevalo, 48 months for conspiracy to transport stolen property
- Wendy Acosta-Arevalo, 24 months for interstate transportation of stolen property
While Quintero-Herrera was the final defendant sentenced among those in custody, authorities stated that one additional member of the ring remains at large.
