COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater City Manager Keith Baker said during Monday night’s budget workshop that they are talking with the Michigan Department of Transportation about possibly converting the section of U.S. 12 between Western Avenue and the bridge across the Coldwater River from four lanes to three.
This option is being looked at after the city found out last week the construction of a new pedestrian bridge to replace the Old U.S. 12 bridge will cost a lot more than originally thought.
Baker indicated MDOT has shown some initial interest.
Currently, it’s not easy for pedestrians or bicyclists to get across the bridge because you can only do it on one side.
MDOT is repaving U.S. 12 from Bronson to the western part of Coldwater this year and the thinking is that crews could convert West Chicago during that time or when the paving project is over. Again, nothing is official and it’s only being discussed at this time.
