QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – Village of Quincy Fire Chief Michael Sherman says smoking is the likely cause of a fire last week that took the life of a Quincy Township man.
Sherman adds the house fire on U.S. 12 just east of Quincy is still being investigated by the Michigan State Police Fire Marshal Division.
He said last week the fire apparently started in the living room.
81-year-old Lydell G. Lyons passed away at Bronson Methodist Hospital’s Burn Unit. He was flown there after Quincy firefighters found him near a couch and pulled him from the burning house.
A woman who lived at the residence reported the fire to Branch County 911 at about 2:00 a.m. last Thursday morning. She was later treated for slight burns and smoke inhalation.
In addition, four dogs were killed in the fire.
Sherman says the State Police Bomb Squad had to remove some blasting caps Tuesday that were found in the part of the home which did not burn.
