COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – While work will soon begin on the removal of the Old US-12 Bridge across the Coldwater River, the City of Coldwater has delayed the construction of a new pedestrian bridge, after officials found out it will cost a lot more than originally thought.
The old bridge is being removed after an inspection last August found it was no longer safe.
A large crane has been assembled for the removal of the old bridge. The crane will be used to install a new steel beam to support the existing water main and for the removal of the bridge deck. The public is asked to avoid this area during the work.
Meanwhile, the City had a second structural engineer inspect the abutments of the existing bridge. The tests suggested the abutments are not suitable for the direct installation of a new pedestrian bridge. New pilings and foundations would have to be constructed which would require the lengthening of the proposed bridge and according to city officials, that would significantly increase the cost.
The City will seek new estimates for the installation of the proposed pedestrian bridge and develop a plan to fund it. Once a plan is prepared, it will be brought back to the Coldwater City Council for possible action
