COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Police Department is looking into reinstating a K-9 unit.
City Manager Keith Baker says in his report for Monday’s City Council meeting that Coldwater Police Officer Cody Longrey has completed his field training orientation process.
Longrey was a K-9 officer with the Quincy Police Department before coming to Coldwater.
Baker says the City has a patrol vehicle that is already equipped for K9 patrol use and Officer Longrey and his partner are already trained in tracking and narcotics searches.
He says the City would acquire the K-9 from Longrey and take over payments for the food, veterinary care and other general expenses estimated to be less than $1,000 per year. The funds would be acquired through the criminal property forfeiture process.
Quincy Village Manager Eric Zuzga and Police Chief Jeremy Burch decided in January to retire the K-9 program in Quincy when Longrey took the Coldwater job. Longrey had been the handler of K-9 Orin for a year-and-a-half.
Zuzga said in January that ownership of the K-9 would be transferred to Longrey on the condition that if Quincy Police need assistance, he will provide it at no charge as long as the dog is certified.
