COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Hillsdale man who was tazed by Coldwater City Police during a struggle on Munson Street last November was sentenced Monday in Branch County Circuit Court after he entered into a plea bargain with the Branch County Prosecutor’s Office.
21-year old Devon Barnett entered guilty pleas to resisting and obstructing a police officer and being in possession of less than 25 grams of a controlled substance. In exchange for his guilty pleas, two other counts of resisting a police officer as well as a methamphetamine possession charge were dropped by prosecutors.
Barnett was given two years of probation and a one year jail sentence with credit for 107 days already served. All time over 180 days was suspended.
He can not possess alcohol, drugs or weapons during his probation. Barnett also can not go into bars and will have to submit to searches without a warrant. He was also ordered to pay over $1,100 in fines and costs.
The confrontation took place two hours after a traffic stop was made on a car Barnett was driving on U.S. 12 near Pierson Street.
Officers said he and a woman passenger were not truthful about the information they provided.
The two suspects were outside a home on Munson Street when police arrived later that night. Police say Barnett fought with officers and was eventually subdued and taken into custody.
