COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council got an earful Monday night from a downtown business owner about the proposed “Lofts at Milnes Plaza” in Milnes Plaza and from residents who live at the newly constructed Apartments at Sauk Trail.
Steven Rish blasted officials for the City of Coldwater as he claimed there were toxins under the Milnes Plaza and Upson parking lots that he found out about several years ago after filing a Freedom of Information Act request with the Michigan Department of Enviromental Quality.
Rish accused the city of committing fraud and threatening the public’s health by hiding information about toxic poisons for over a decade and he called on the city to do some testing on the Milnes parking lot before selling it to anybody.
The City Council is scheduled during their March 12, 2018 meeting to consider passing an ordinance that would implement a Payment in Lieu of Tax Request, otherwise known as a PILOT, after the ordinance was introduced Monday night. The developers are seeking an eight percent PILOT as part of the project.
Meanwhile, several Apartment at Sauk Trail residents showed up at the Council meeting and two of them complained about what they felt was the poor quality of the buildings. Complaints ranged from being able to hear what was going on inside of neighboring apartments to overall shoddy construction.
There have been 15 reviews posted on the Facebook page for the Apartments at Sauk Trail. Eight have given the complex five stars while seven others only gave it one star.
