COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Pennfield Panthers grabbed sole possession of first place in the Interstate 8 boys basketball standings on Tuesday night as they defeated the Coldwater Cardinals 57-45 in a battle of unbeaten teams at the Coach Floyd Eby Gymnasium.
Pennfield was in control throughout the entire game. After leading 7-6 at the end of the first quarter, the Panthers used a 21-14 second quarter to take a 28-20 halftime lead.
The Cardinals got a three point bucket to start the second half but Pennfield scored eight straight to build a 36-23 lead and Coldwater did not threaten seriously after that.
Coldwater was unable to stop Pennfield’s Ryne Petersen who blew up for a game-high 29 points which included a perfect nine-for-nine at the foul line.
Ethan Crabtree led Coldwater with 14 points and eight rebounds while Brandon Downs had 11 points and Spencer Rodesiler had nine points and five assists.

The underclassmen games were split. Pennfield won the JV game in overtime 55-51. Gavin Budd led Coldwater with 14 points while Aiden Marsden had 12 points. Elijah Sloan had nine points and Grant Carter, whose bucket with five seconds left sent the game into overtime, had six rebounds. Coldwater won the freshman game 31-14 as Evan Porter scored nine points to lead the Cardinals.
